Risdon of Company H, 10th Vermont Infantry, dated July 10, 1863, from Camp in the Field at South Mountain, Maryland, just days after the Battle of Gettysburg during the Union Army’s pursuit of General Robert E. Lee. Addressed to his father and mother, Risdon writes that he is well, describes the regiment’s movements, and notes that they expect to enter battle at any moment. He reports that Lee is “nearly caged,” mentions seeing members of the famous Vermont Brigade, names fellow soldiers including Tim Bromley, Wes Gifford, and John Kelly, and records that H. H.
