1860 South Carolina Horry District 146-Acre Land Deed Little Pee Dee # 1118

Original handwritten 1860 Horry District, South Carolina land deed documenting the transfer of approximately 146 acres from Matthew Johnson to Joseph J. Johnson for $300. Dated July 24, 1860, the deed describes a plantation or tract of land located near the Little Pee Dee River and a neighboring swamp. It conveys the property together with its associated rights, hereditaments and appurtenances to Joseph J. Johnson and his heirs forever. Matthew Johnson executed the deed using his handwritten “X” mark, accompanied by a hand-drawn legal seal. The document was witnessed by John A. Johnson and Benjamin Holt. The reverse contains an August 4, 1860 sworn acknowledgment confirming the execution of the deed, along with later county filing and recording notations apparently dating to 1904. An interesting original antebellum South Carolina manuscript with Horry County, Little Pee Dee River, genealogical and land-history interest. Condition includes original folds, toning, foxing, staining, edge wear, small tears, fold separations and minor paper loss. The writing remains largely clear and readable.
