1883 SC Horry County 100-Acre Swan Swamp Real Estate Mortgage # 1119

Original 1883 Horry County, South Carolina real estate mortgage executed by Matthew F. Fowler in favor of Solomon H. Davis to secure a $50 debt plus interest. The mortgage covers approximately 100 acres of land on Swan Swamp and includes a handwritten boundary description naming neighboring property lines. The obligation was dated December 28, 1883, with payment due on or before January 1, 1885. Printed on an attractive Walker, Evans & Cogswell “Mortgage of Real Estate” form, revised in 1882. The reverse contains official Horry County recording information showing the mortgage was recorded in January 1884, together with a later April 21, 1886 assignment to Burroughs & Collins. The assignment appears to have been executed by Solomon H. Davis using his X mark and includes additional witness and recording notations. An interesting original post-Reconstruction South Carolina document with Horry County, Swan Swamp, land-history, legal-history and genealogical interest. Condition includes original folds, toning, foxing, staining, edge wear, small tears and weakened areas along the fold lines. Later handwritten and red-ink notations appear on the reverse.
