Original World War I–era handwritten U.S. Navy serviceman’s letter with its associated mailing envelope, dated October 26, 1917. Written from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, the letter is addressed “Dear Mother” and gives the sender’s return location as: U.S. Navy Yard Annex Barracks 235 The writer reports that he is well, mentions receiving letters from family members, and refers to Claudia, Ruth, Ella, Albert, and other relatives or friends. He asks his mother to continue writing and closes “Your Son,” followed by a handwritten signature or initials that are difficult to identify with certainty. Included is the matching period envelope addressed to Mrs. W. F. Mishoe, R.F.D. No. 3, Allsbrook, South Carolina.
