1921 Sears Roebuck Condolence Estate Letter Illustrated Chicago Letterhead #1171

Original August 20, 1921 Sears, Roebuck and Co. business letter on illustrated company letterhead from Chicago, Illinois. The letter is addressed to Mr. G. F. Watts, R.F.D. 1, Box 244, Gurley, South Carolina. Sears expresses regret over the death of his brother, S. M. Watts, and provides instructions for returning agricultural implements by freight to the Bradley Implement Company of Bradley, Illinois. The recipient was asked to use the enclosed shipping tags and bills of lading, retain a copy, and return the original freight receipt so the deceased customer’s transaction could be closed in Sears’ records. The attractive letterhead features an illustration of the large Sears complex and the slogan: “Our Guarantee Stands the Test in the Scales of Justice.” The closing is printed or typewritten “Sears, Roebuck and Co.” rather than personally signed. No envelope or referenced shipping enclosures are included. Condition is consistent with a century-old business document, including original folds, age toning, scattered spotting, creases, minor edge wear, a small edge tear, and light surface soiling.
