Conrad Rossi-Diehl Signed Hamlet Soliloquy Drawing w/ Foltz Notes # B1179

Original Conrad Rossi-Diehl “Hamlet—Soliloquy” pen-and-ink drawing, executed on heavy cardboard-like artist’s board or illustration stock. The front features a dramatic portrait of Hamlet in profile, along with the handwritten title “Hamlet—Soliloquy,” the phrase “Emotional Pen-Scratches,” and the artist’s name, Conrad Rossi-Diehl. The reverse contains multiple pencil and ink design studies, including floral ornament, scrollwork, geometric borders, a rosette and a classical vessel. It is also inscribed “Some of Foltz’s drawings” and includes an art instruction attributed to Philip/Philipp Foltz, advising the artist to determine a figure’s character and expression before consulting nature. The Foltz wording is a historical reference or quotation and should not be considered a Foltz signature. This is a visually appealing and historically interesting double-sided studio or instructional artwork connected with Rossi-Diehl’s work as an artist and art educator. Condition: Age toning, surface marks, edge and corner wear, small nicks and creases, and a clipped upper-left corner. The heavy board has general wear consistent with age and studio use.
