1944 Norway London Issue Merchant Marine Cover USA WWII Naval Censor # 1195

Original World War II Norwegian Merchant Marine censored cover, mailed to New York City in 1944. The envelope bears four colorful Norway London Issue stamps totaling 1 krone, canceled with boxed “NORSK SKIPSPOST HANDELSFLÅTEN” markings, translating to Norwegian Ship Post—Merchant Fleet. The cover was examined by wartime authorities and retains numbered U.S. censorship tape 6706. It also carries a scarce handstamp stating that the communication was referred to the District Postal Censor by U.S. Naval Authorities. The reverse has a New York arrival postmark dated February 1, 1944. Addressed to William R. Rudrow, care of Diehmann, Wright & Pugh, 144 Whitehall Street, New York City. An appealing piece of Norwegian maritime, merchant-fleet, censorship and transatlantic WWII postal history. Condition shows genuine wartime handling, including folds, edge wear, small tears, toning, staining and wear to the censor tape.
