1885 Krems Austria to Philadelphia 5kr Underpaid Cover 5¢ Due # 1201

Original 1885 Austrian Empire transatlantic postal-history cover mailed from Krems, Austria, to Manayunk, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The envelope is franked with a red 5-kreuzer Austrian Imperial Eagle stamp tied by a clear Krems circular date cancellation. The cover was apparently underpaid for international postage, resulting in the prominent black “T” taxation marking, “U.S. Charge to Collect” handstamp and bold “5 Cents” postage-due marking. The reverse displays additional New York and Philadelphia receiving/transit postmarks, documenting its journey from Austria to the United States. A visually impressive piece of 19th-century Austrian-American postal history featuring desirable postage-due markings and a Manayunk destination. Condition is well worn, with toning, stains, creases, tears, edge and corner losses, and damage around the envelope flap, consistent with age and postal handling. No contents are included.
