1916 German Bible Readings & 1929 Otto Thiele Death Notice Texas # 2501

Offered is a 1916 German-language illustrated Bible study book with an original 1929 Fredericksburg, Texas death notice preserved inside. The book is titled Bibellesungen für den Familienkreis (“Bible Readings for the Family Circle”), published in 1916 by the Pacific Press Publishing Association of Mountain View, California. This substantial German-language religious reference contains hundreds of topical Bible questions and answers, along with numerous black-and-white biblical and historical illustrations. The original green decorated cloth binding displays attractive period lettering and ornamentation. A handwritten ownership inscription on the marbled endpaper reads approximately: “Mr. Henry Durst and family, Cherry Mt. School, Texas.” Also included is an original German-language Todes-Anzeige death announcement for Otto Thiele, issued at Fredericksburg, Texas, on August 27, 1929. The notice states that Thiele died at age 44 years, 3 months and 3 days, with burial scheduled for August 28 at the city cemetery. It retains its original black mourning border and was found stored with the book. Together, the two pieces offer strong interest for collectors of Texas-German history, Fredericksburg genealogy, antique religious books, Adventist publishing and early Texas ephemera. Condition: The book shows age-related rubbing, spotting, edge wear and small losses at the spine ends. Interior pages have toning and scattered staining, but the text and illustrations remain generally clear. The death notice has light toning, minor edge wear and small marks consistent with age.
