1940 WWII France to Switzerland Swiss Consulate Censored Postcard # 1236

Original June 1940 World War II censored postcard mailed from Chaumont, Haute-Marne, France, to André Borie in Lausanne, Switzerland. Franked with two French stamps totaling 1.20 francs and bearing wartime postal cancellations. Features a prominent official seal of the Swiss Federal Political Department, Division of Foreign Interests, together with a purple handstamp identifying the Swiss Consulate temporarily transferred to Chaumont, 9 Avenue Gambetta. Also bears wartime censorship markings and a large blue manuscript “X.” The reverse contains a lengthy typewritten French personal message dated Chaumont, June 13, 1940, written during the German invasion of France and only days before the French armistice. The writer discusses interrupted communications, Lausanne, work and family matters. An unusual piece of WWII French and Swiss diplomatic postal history, combining an invasion-period date, Swiss consular markings, foreign-interests administration, censorship and an intact contemporary message.
