The letter is typed on United States Railroad Administration letterhead listing the Spokane, Portland & Seattle Railroad, Oregon Trunk Railroad, and Oregon Electric Railroad. It contains detailed firsthand information about early-20th-century life, including railroad employment at $105 per month, purchasing a five-room Portland home for $2,300, the Portland Rose Festival, the Shriners Convention, and travel between Portland and Los Angeles. The original envelope was mailed from Portland, Oregon, to Los Angeles, California, and bears a May 1920 Portland postmark. Also included is an early Missouri Pacific Railway “Report of Sacked U.S. Mail Carried” form used to record mail transported by train.
