1933 France to FDR White House Cover Paris Gitanes H.R. Harmer Provenance #1292

Original 1933 French postal cover addressed to President Franklin D. Roosevelt at the White House, Washington, D.C. An especially desirable piece of early FDR-era presidential and postal history dating from the first year of Roosevelt’s presidency. The cover was mailed from Paris, France and bears three red 50-centime République Française postage stamps with Paris cancellations and a prominent boxed “GITANES” advertising/slogan cancel across the stamps. The circular postal marking reads Paris XVIII / R. de Clignancourt and is dated 1933. Addressed in period handwriting to: Monsieur Franklin D. Roosevelt President of the United States White House Washington, D.C. U.S.A. Most importantly, the reverse bears the red provenance marking: “FROM THE FRANKLIN D. ROOSEVELT COLLECTION – AUTHENTICATED BY H.R. HARMER INC., N.Y.” This provenance makes the cover substantially more interesting than an ordinary piece of mail addressed to Roosevelt, connecting it directly with the Franklin D. Roosevelt Collection dispersed through noted philatelic auction firm H.R. Harmer. Condition shows expected age and postal handling, including edge and corner wear, creasing, small tears and remnants of prior sealing/opening. Stamps and postal markings remain clearly visible.
