1835 Edward Baines History of the Wars of the French Revolution – Vol. II Original 1835 Philadelphia edition of Edward Baines’ History of the Wars of the French Revolution, from the Breaking Out of the War, in 1792, to the Restoration of a General Peace, in 1815, with additional history of the war between the United States and Great Britain, revised by William Grimshaw. Published by M’Carty & Davis, Philadelphia, 1835. This is Volume II of the two-volume work. A particularly attractive feature is the engraved double-page illustration depicting American Generals and French Marshals. The volume also contains extensive early American material covering the War of 1812, including the declaration of war, American military and naval operations, Baltimore, and other important events. Several period handwritten ownership inscriptions appear on the front leaves and title page, including dated 19th-century inscriptions. These add character and provenance interest, although the identities of the previous owners have not been independently researched or verified. Condition: Antique condition with substantial wear to the original binding, including rubbing, scuffing, edge wear, and deterioration consistent with a book nearly 200 years old. Interior pages show age toning, foxing, spotting, and occasional edge wear. The photographed engraved plate remains attractive and the interior appears generally well preserved for its age.
