4 Civil War Era CDV Photos 1864-66 Revenue Stamps Ohio Pittsburgh #1391

Offered together is a group of four original Civil War-era cartes de visite (CDV) photographs, dating to approximately 1864–1866, each retaining an original 2-cent U.S. Internal Revenue tax stamp on the reverse. These photograph tax stamps provide an unusually narrow dating window, as the federal tax on photographs was in effect during the Civil War and immediate postwar period. The stamps include both orange and blue 2¢ U.S. Internal Revenue issues, with period pen cancellations. The group includes: * Two portraits by L. Janney of Portsmouth, Ohio, whose studio imprint reads: “L. Janney, East Side of Market Street, One door above Front, Portsmouth, O.” * One of the Janney cards carries a handwritten “Nov. 1865” notation, providing an exact Civil War-era date. * One portrait by Dabb’s Photographic Galleries, 46, 48 & 50 St. Clair Street, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, with an attractive blue 2¢ Internal Revenue stamp on the reverse. * One charming image of an older girl holding a younger child, with “Littlemother” handwritten on the reverse and an orange 2¢ revenue stamp applied over part of the photographer/publisher imprint. The three portrait cards feature period female subjects in typical mid-19th-century dress and hairstyles. The “Littlemother” card appears to reproduce a sentimental period genre image of a young girl caring for a child.
