1846 Transatlantic Folded Letter – Bridlington, England to Vernon, New York – 1/- & 7¢ Postal Markings Original 1846 handwritten transatlantic folded letter sent from Bridlington (historically also called Burlington), Yorkshire, England, to William Garton, Miller, Vernon, Oneida County, New York, North America. The letter itself is dated: Burlington, March 4th, 1846 The address panel bears a clear BRIDLINGTON / MR 5 / 1846 postal marking along with an attractive red manuscript 1/- rate marking and large black 7 postal charge. The letter is signed Wm. Heselton and contains several pages of detailed family correspondence. The writer acknowledges an earlier October 1845 letter and discusses the receipt of £80, family finances, the health of William Garton’s parents and other relatives, brothers and sisters, Martha, Uncle Ringrose, weather conditions, family affairs, and arrangements concerning additional money to be sent for the family’s benefit.
