1850 Beverley England to Michigan Death Letter Wax Seal Postal History #1421

Original 1850 transatlantic handwritten death-notification letter with matching postal cover, sent from Beverley, England to Mr. William Garton in Michigan, USA. The letter is dated December 23, 1850 and informs Garton of the death of his mother on December 7 following an illness. The writer describes her peaceful passing, burial, family matters, and expresses the hope that the family may someday meet again, making this a poignant piece of mid-19th-century English-American immigrant correspondence. The original envelope remains with the letter and displays multiple period postal markings, including Beverley, Hull and Liverpool December 1850 transit marks, along with a January 16 U.S. receiving mark and additional manuscript postal-rate notations. The reverse retains a substantial original red wax seal. The writing paper is blind embossed “FURBY / STATIONER / BRIDLINGTON,” providing an additional period Yorkshire stationery connection.
