1837 Oneida County NY Mortgage Luther Eastman George Stoddard Paper Seal #1418

Original 1837 handwritten and printed mortgage indenture from Vernon, Oneida County, New York, involving Luther Eastman and George Stoddard. This large period legal document is dated April 15, 1837 and records a mortgage involving property in the Village of Vernon, Oneida County, New York. The mortgage amount was $350, with handwritten terms, property description, signatures, and later payment notations recorded directly on the document. The reverse contains numerous additional period endorsements and receipts showing the mortgage remained an active legal document for several years. These include 1838 and 1839 payment entries, multiple handwritten signatures of George Stoddard, Oneida County recording information, and a later notation showing the mortgage was satisfied/cancelled of record. Also present is an attractive surviving pale blue embossed paper seal, along with the original printed legal-form text and extensive manuscript additions in period ink. A desirable piece of pre-Civil War New York legal, property, genealogy, and Oneida County history, especially interesting because it retains the complete history of the mortgage from its original execution through later payments and satisfaction. Condition: Approximately 189 years old with expected age-related wear including heavy folding, toning, staining, foxing, edge wear, small tears, paper loss, and areas of old discoloration.
