1857-61 3¢ Washington Scott 26 Cover Jackson MI to Harrison Square MA #1434

Original mid-19th century U.S. postal history cover bearing a 3¢ George Washington perforated stamp from the 1857–1861 issue, most likely Scott #26 Type III. The cover is addressed in attractive period handwriting to Miss Ellen M. Prouty, Harrison Square, Massachusetts and appears to have been mailed from Jackson, Michigan, with a March 14 circular date postmark tying the stamp to the envelope. The 3¢ Washington stamp remains attached to the original cover and shows a strong black cancellation. The stamp has some shortened perforations and a crease/fold at the lower-right corner. The envelope shows typical age toning, handling wear, edge wear, and an irregularly opened/torn edge, as shown in the photographs. A desirable early U.S. postal-history piece with an attractive handwritten address and identifiable Michigan-to-Massachusetts routing.
