1862 Civil War Cover Clinton Iowa to Camp Chase Morgan County VA #1435

Original Civil War-era postal cover dated March 27, 1862, mailed from Clinton, Iowa, and bearing a 3¢ George Washington 1861 issue stamp, Scott #65. The faded handwritten address appears to be directed to Camp Chase, Morgan County, Virginia, a Union military encampment associated with the Paw Paw area during the Civil War. The stamp is tied to the envelope by a clear CLINTON, IOA. / MAR 27 circular postmark. The reverse has an important period handwritten notation reading “Received March the 29 1862”, providing additional contemporary dating. The back flap also retains an attractive embossed decorative paper seal. A desirable piece of 1862 Civil War postal history with an Iowa origin, military-camp destination, original 3¢ Washington franking, and period receiving notation. Condition is as shown, with substantial age toning, faded handwriting, edge wear, tears, folds, and other expected wear from more than 160 years of age.
