1889 Myers & Gordon Leather Cover New York to Machetanz Ohio Scott 213 #1439

Original 1889 advertising and commercial postal-history cover from Myers & Gordon, commission merchants dealing in hides, rough, sole and finished leather, located at 82 Gold Street, New York. The cover is addressed to J. Machetanz & Bro. in New Matamoras, Ohio, a firm associated with the historic Machetanz tannery and leather business. Franked with a green 2¢ George Washington stamp, appearing to be Scott #213, and tied by a bold New York duplex cancellation. The circular postmark appears dated JUL 4, 6 PM, 1889, giving this cover an interesting Independence Day postal usage. The reverse bears a faint New Matamoras, Ohio receiving/backstamp, further documenting the cover’s original journey from New York to Ohio. A desirable piece of late-19th-century American commercial history connecting the New York leather trade with an Ohio tannery operation.
