1833 William T. Barry ALS Postmaster General Andrew Jackson Signed Letter #1466

Original 1833 autograph letter signed by William T. Barry (1784–1835), who served as United States Postmaster General under President Andrew Jackson and was the first Postmaster General to serve as a member of the President’s Cabinet. The letter is headed from the General Post Office Department, Washington, and dated January 27, 1833. Barry writes to the Editors of the National Intelligencer, requesting that another daily copy of the newspaper be sent for use of the Post Office Department and, for the present, delivered to his lodgings at Mrs. McPherson’s on 7th Street. The letter is entirely handwritten and concludes with a bold “W. T. Barry” signature. A desirable piece of early American postal and political history dating from the Andrew Jackson administration, with additional interest for collectors of the U.S. Post Office, Washington, D.C., early newspapers, presidential history, and 19th-century autographs. Condition: Good antique condition for a document nearly 200 years old. Original mailing/storage folds are present, along with scattered age toning, light spotting, edge wear, and small edge losses/nicks. The handwriting remains strong and highly legible, and the Barry signature is clear and bold. Please examine all photographs closely, as they are part of the condition description.
