John A J Creswell Signed 1873 Autograph U.S. Postmaster General Grant #1450

Original John Angel James Creswell (1828–1891) autograph cut, boldly signed “Jno. A. J. Creswell” and dated March 15th, 1873. Creswell was serving as United States Postmaster General in President Ulysses S. Grant’s Cabinet when this piece was signed. He served as Postmaster General from 1869 to 1874 and was a prominent figure in the modernization and expansion of the U.S. postal system during the Reconstruction era. He previously represented Maryland in both the U.S. House of Representatives and U.S. Senate. The original autograph cut measures approximately 3 inches wide × 1 1/2 inches tall. It is currently displayed on a larger collector presentation sheet containing printed biographical information about Creswell. The autograph remains dark, bold and clearly legible. The original paper exhibits expected signs of age, including toning, old fold/crease lines, trimmed corners and evidence of previous mounting.
