Timothy Pickering Signed Autograph “By the President” c.1795-1800 + Bio #1467

Original antique clipped autograph attributed to Timothy Pickering (1745–1829), prominent Revolutionary War figure and early American statesman who served as U.S. Postmaster General, Secretary of War, and Secretary of State under Presidents George Washington and John Adams. The approximately 1 1/2” x 4” period paper fragment bears a large handwritten “Timothy Pickering” signature beneath the printed wording “By the President,” suggesting that it was clipped from a larger official government or presidential document. The autograph is accompanied by an older Timothy Pickering biographical collector/display sheet with mounting corners, indicating that the signature was previously preserved and identified as part of an autograph collection. The accompanying sheet is included with the purchase but should not be considered a professional certificate of authenticity. The signature remains dark and highly legible. The paper exhibits expected age toning, folds/creases, scattered spotting and general antique wear. There is a noticeable semicircular section missing from the lower edge, as clearly shown in the photographs. The piece has been removed from its former display mount. An appealing early American autograph associated with one of the most important government officials of the Washington and Adams administrations. Pickering also served during the American Revolution and later represented Massachusetts in both the U.S. Senate and House of Representatives. Measurements: approximately 1 1/2” x 4”.
