1865 Benedict Arnold Court-Martial — Limited Edition, Leather Bound Proceedings of a General Court Martial for the Trial of Major General Arnold. With an Introduction, Notes, and Index. New York: Privately Printed, 1865. A scarce nineteenth-century reprint of the proceedings of Benedict Arnold’s 1779 court-martial, an episode preceding his notorious betrayal of the American cause. Originally published in Philadelphia in 1780, the proceedings were reissued in this privately printed 1865 edition with an introduction, notes, and index. The volume includes an engraved portrait of Arnold, a red-and-black 1865 title page, and a reproduction of the original 1780 title page. Both title pages belong to the 1865 publication. Limited printing: 100 octavo copies and 35 larger quarto copies. This volume measures approximately 10 × 6½ inches, consistent with the octavo issue. Signature: The limitation page bears an ink signature reading “F. S. Hoffman,” associated with the preparation and publication of this edition. The signature has not been independently authenticated. Decorative leather binding with gilt ornamentation, raised spine bands, and marbled endpapers. A previous owner’s ink inscription and pencil research annotations are present; their writers have not been identified.
