c1857-61 3¢ Washington Cover Francis A Fisher Sutherland Falls VT Marble #1496

Original early Vermont postal-history cover, dating approximately 1857–1861, addressed to Francis A. Fisher, Esq., Sutherland Falls, Vermont. Francis A. Fisher is historically documented as being associated with the early marble works at Sutherland Falls, an important Vermont marble-producing community that later became Proctor, Vermont. Fisher was also among the incorporators of the Sutherland Falls Hotel Company in 1857, adding notable local and industrial-history interest to this cover. The envelope is franked with a perforated 3¢ George Washington stamp from the 1857–61 issue period, likely from the Scott #26 family, although the exact variety has not been expertized. The stamp is tied by a heavy black circular cancellation. The originating post office is not fully readable from the surviving strike. The cover shows genuine age and use, including toning, staining, edge wear, a heavily cancelled stamp, and damage/loss to the rear flap and seal area.
