Item description

1855 U.S. Post Office Department Draft – Pittston, Maine – $33.50 Antique U.S. Post Office Department “Transportation of the Mails” payment draft, dated February 6, 1855, in the amount of $33.50, associated with the post office at Pittston, Maine. The handwritten payee’s name appears to read Benjamin Bailey, with the first name abbreviated. This attractive nineteenth-century document features elaborate banknote-style engraving, including steamboat and early railroad scenes, an oval portrait, and a seated allegorical figure with a shield. Decorative borders, ornate lettering, and flowing handwritten entries make it an appealing piece for display or a historical collection. The printer’s imprint reads “Hufty & Danforth, Philadᵃ & New York.” The lower-right signature, above the printed title “Postmaster General,” is attributed to James Campbell. A countersignature reading “Wm. F. Phillips” appears above “Auditor for the Post Office Department.” Additional handwritten notations appear on the reverse. Signature note: The James Campbell signature attribution is based on visual comparison and has not been independently authenticated. It is offered as an attributed signature, not a guaranteed personally handwritten Campbell autograph. An appealing addition to collections of Maine postal history, antique financial documents, early transportation, and nineteenth-century American paper ephemera. Condition: Please review all photographs carefully to assess the item’s condition and details. Photos are an integral part of the description. The exact document pictured is the one you will receive.
